Lyrics for a new project
"We been livin with the lights out
And we’re stumblin, what a mess we’re in.
Any spark would be a light house
Up against the wind barely flickerin.”
Pay attention to what stirs your affection for Christ, that’s where you need to be.
Life isn’t a compilation and real people aren’t ever a best of.
Art contains humanity but is not human. It’s a robust compilation of talent, effort, time, resources, experience and often with contributions from many people with varying combinations of these things. We can’t review, criticize, reject, and praise people the way we do art and entertainment.
My point here is that the critical eye I look through to spot errors in movies or rip-offs in music is the same lens I use to watch people, and even more damaging; the same filter I use on myself. Honing all my focus on a couple things I do way wrong or extremely un-original; I blow reality out of proportion and forget to bask in all that is beautiful, unique, unscripted, and real about you and me.
I want to see myself, my friends, and my family as a work in progress. I want it be an honor that I get to step onto the set of their life once in awhile and play a key role in helping their story come together as they contribute to mine, the way it’s meant to be. But I want to remember that I am here for the behind the scenes drama, hilarious bloopers, and story in the making too. I don’t just get to witness the scenes that would make it onto the final cut, but all the ones that went really wrong, were poorly delivered or were just plain boring too. I want to consider all the scenes I wasn’t in instead of putting together their story from my limited perspective. I have to give others and myself the right to change up the script in the middle of the shoot. I can’t treat them like the l can see the ending coming from a mile away (we call that judging). I want to give whatever I can to help them write an alternate ending, not help my narrow predictions come true.
Our social network McDonald’s quality bullshit feed has made us sick. We overshare our victory, undershare our pain. Even when we do share our pain we twist failure into vanity too, unable to ask for help out of humility. We want immediate results in our search engine and are disappointed when we don’t get the same speedy answers in our search for love and purpose.
We can’t just look for the errors and inconsistencies in other people; that’s too easy because they are right there in broad daylight. It takes real character to walk with people and get to know them instead of point at what’s wrong from a distance. It takes real creativity to help someone discover what is good about themselves and how they can use it, instead of constantly proving to them where they are weak. It takes real love to see the “making of” and stick it out anyway.
Sorry, not sorry; I didn’t have list of 5 easy suggestions to try or 22 things you didn’t know you needed with pictures to go along with it. Don’t just leap for resources that simplify our situation. Be wary of coming to significant conclusions quickly.Your brain was a gift and it is thirsty for knowledge. Recall that we often learn more on the journey than we do from our destination, so consider interacting with less media that does the whole thinking part for you. Pick up a book and try to finish it ya silly goose.
One of my goals for 2014 is;
talk less + listen more = write better
